Ulric Von Katz was born to a German Businessman who married into English Aristocracy and secured a lucrative contract as an export/import businessman in Portsmouth, England.
Given his mixed national heritage and unusual name, Ulric always felt awkward as a youth, and found comfort in reading books, stories and hearing tall tales of his father's journey. One day, shortly after his fourteenth birthday, his father was drowned during a terrible storm in the North Sea, leaving Ulric, a dreamy, shy young man, the incredibly difficult prospect of caring for his somewhat otherworldly mother and her small, rundown estate. But the estate was sold of, and his inheritance was held for him by a Ward, and his mother, devestated by the loss of her husband, and already a frail person, was taken to a Sanitorium to recover from her "Hysteria".
Ulric was forced to leave for Germany, and spent two and half bitter years in his stern Uncle's rural castle home. At first it was exciting, and he learned much of his father's ancestral home. But he longed to return to England, enjoying more the nation of King Arthur and Ripping Yarns than the dour nation of Prussian Order, rigid discipline and a harsh, guttural language that he found difficult to speak.
It was around this time that his Daemon, the White Tiger Elai'syra came to him, and she became a crucial companion and advisor, helping sooth some of his grief and angst over the internment of his mother and death of his father.
Escaping his Uncle's care once he had turned 16, he sought to make his own way back to England, and spent the next 3 years working various odd, menial jobs across France and Germany, picking up the languages with great difficulty, and meeting much hostility. This hardened him, and made him withdraw into himself, preferring to keep his true feelings and identity concealed, and shrouding himself in mystery, lies, and romantic deception.
Eventually, after saving hard and living hard on his own, he returned to England, and went directly to his Family Soilictor's. Explaining his situation and calling on old bonds of friendship, the Solicitor agreed to help Ulric get his inheritance back. Although Ulric also wanted to find someway to free his mother, he knew that the weight of a company and its money would be an enormous enough burden, and it would help him help her in the long run, as well as secure his father's legacy, rather than let it be squandered by the greedy board of directors.
Confronting the Board of Directors with his Solicitor firm beside him, he succeeded in winning for himself his inheritance and his rightful place as head of the Company. But he knew he lacked Business Acumen, aswell as the right connections, so he went to London to learn how to be a Businessman by working with and under another old friend. However, once he got there, he was shocked and apalled that London should be as bad, if not worse, than the grim city of Berlin, streets crawling with poverty and the air choked with smog. He remembered his upbringing, and how his strong sense of integrity and code of honour had kept him sane and alive through the hard years.
So he resolved that, whilst he learned how to manage affairs and work with his good friend the solicitor's friends at the Accounting House, he would seek to aid those less fortunate than him, and by night worked with Philanthropy organisations to alleviate some of the poverty that so offended him. Whlst working with these organisations, he soon learned of the rampancy of crime, and knew that if he was to truly cut to the heart of London's problems, he would have to learn how to defend himself.
Over the years that came, he matured into a confident, polite young gentleman, learning by day how to manage affairs of business and act with decorum, and by night seeking, either by donating to soup kitchens or investigating shady gambling dens and bars, to alleviate the twin conditions of poverty and crime. He did not ever seek to actively engage criminals, but rather sought to compile as much information on them as he could, so that he might turn it over to the Police and Scotland Yard, acting as a Freelance- and Anonymous- Investigator. He soon became disappointed with their lack of action on his carefully gathered information, however, and vowed to act on it.
One night, during a particularly bleak winter, he heard a woman's screams, and discovered a fair maiden about to be set upon by thugs. He raced to intervene, angry that such an apalling crime could occur simply because of the cold fog, and because this woman was beautiful and poor. He chased them away, and helped her to her feet. Her name, she said, was Emmalena Ellis.
However, he heard the thugs returning with their friends, and, rather than endanger this young woman further, he took to his heels to lead them away. Before he vanished, he whispered his real name to her, and handed her a piece of paper. Something about this young, bedraggled woman had caught his eye and his mind, and he found as he ran through the back alleys away from the thugs, leading them away from the woman, that he couldnt help thinking about her eyes and her brief, warm smile at seeing him.
Something told him that someday soon, their Fates would become intertwined...

I've walked far more dangerous roads than these, my dear. London, Berlin, they're all the same- they smell as bad as they look.
